Arizona Man Arrested After Off-road Crash Kills Toddler and Injures Two Other Children

A man is in custody following an off-road crash in northern Arizona on Sunday that killed a child and injured two others.

Just before 11 a.m., Coconino County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a rollover crash involving an off-highway vehicle (OHV). When first responders arrived at the scene on Forest Road 535 and State Route 89A near the top of Oak Creek Canyon, they discovered three injured people.

According to the sheriff’s office, a 19-month-old was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead. According to investigators, the toddler was not in a child safety seat or a suitable restraint.

A 7-year-old and a 17-year-old were also injured, but not seriously.

According to the sheriff’s office, the three children were passengers in an off-highway vehicle driven by 37-year-old Miguel A. Pacheco. Following an investigation, he was arrested on charges of manslaughter, three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of felony endangerment, two counts of aggravated DUI, reckless driving, driving on a suspended or revoked license, and possession of narcotics. He is being held under a $500,000 cash-only bond.

Other details, such as what caused the crash, have not been released.

Other agencies that responded were the National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, the Highlands Fire Department, and Guardian Medical.
