61-year-old Woman Dies in Alligator Attack While Canoeing With Husband in Florida

A tragic alligator attack claimed the life of a Florida woman on Tuesday while she was canoeing with her husband on Lake Kissimmee.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), 61-year-old Cynthia Diekema and her husband were paddling through shallow water at Tiger Creek around 4 p.m. when their 14-foot canoe passed over a large alligator in just 2.5 feet of water. The alligator reacted aggressively, thrashing and capsizing the canoe, sending both occupants into the lake.

Officials say Diekema ended up on top of the alligator and was bitten. “Her husband attempted to intervene, but was unsuccessful,” said FWC Major Evan Laskowski. The couple, who lived in Davenport, were enjoying a recreational outing when the incident occurred.

A Polk County Sheriff’s Office helicopter later located Diekema’s body, which was recovered by wildlife officials.

FWC officers and trappers responded quickly to the area and captured two large alligators—one measuring 11 feet, 4 inches, and another estimated between 10 and 11 feet. It has not yet been confirmed which gator was responsible for the fatal attack.

This is the second reported alligator attack on Lake Kissimmee since March, according to FWC. “While fatal alligator attacks are extremely rare, this tragedy is a stark reminder of the powerful wildlife that inhabit our natural areas,” said Roger Young of the FWC. “We remain focused on ensuring public safety while protecting Florida’s native species.”

Campers and residents near the lake expressed sadness and caution. “I’ve lived here for over 40 years,” said camper Taylor Stokes. “Everyone knows—don’t swim in ponds or lakes. I even check the bathtub twice. My heart goes out to the family.”
