An incident involving at least two automobiles closed a portion of James Street in Syracuse Thursday night near Lincoln Middle School.
According to witnesses, one car was travelling “at full speed” for several blocks before the incident. The incident resulted in a fire hydrant being lifted out of the ground. It is laying on James Street, with around four feet of tubing linked to it. One person who was near the collision site observing the police response reported hearing what sounded like an explosion.
A review of 911 dispatch recordings from the time of the crash reveals that this was classified as a “mass casualty” occurrence, putting hospitals on alert and drawing all available police units.
911 calls to first responders began to arrive just after 8:45 p.m. CNY Central crews on the scene observed as four people were put into ambulances and sent to Upstate Hospital. A privacy screen has been installed around one of the automobiles, and authorities remain on the scene while Syracuse Police investigate.
