Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) claimed Friday that recent earthquakes and an upcoming eclipse are “strong signs” from God that America must “repent.”
“God is sending America clear signs to repent. Earthquakes, eclipses, and much more are on the way. “I pray that our country listens,” Greene said in a post on X, the platform that replaced Twitter.
The Georgia lawmaker spoke just hours after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck in Lebanon, New Jersey, some 50 miles from Manhattan. According to the United States Geological Survey, it was reported at a depth of about three miles.
Greene’s comments come as a total solar eclipse is due to cast darkness over areas of North America on Monday.
According to NASA, it will depart from Texas and pass through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Greene’s native state, Georgia, is not on the “path of totality.”
It is the first total solar eclipse since 2017, and the next one isn’t predicted until August 2044, according to NASA.
Greene has previously been chastised for promoting conspiracy theories, such as the claim that California wildfires were triggered by space lasers controlled by a powerful Jewish family. She has also supported former President Trump’s baseless assertions that the 2020 election was stolen.
