Johnson will conduct a joint press conference with Trump on Friday at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate, where the top House Republican will promote legislation to “elevate the issue of non-citizens voting in federal elections,” according to a source familiar with the plans.

The gathering is also intended to inspire Republican senators to “get on the team” on election security, according to the source.

Non-citizens are already barred from voting in federal elections in the United States, albeit this is unusual. The former president has long wrongly claimed that voter fraud was common in the 2020 presidential race.

The bill also comes as House Republicans attempt to present a united front, despite the instability that has frequently overtaken the lower chamber.

Their meeting will be the first public appearance by the two Republicans and comes at a critical time for Johnson’s speakership. The speaker is currently under assault from conservative firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., as well as other ultraconservatives in the House.
