Candidate charged with misdemeanor for allegedly stealing mail in Scotia

Assembly candidate Joe Mastroianni has been charged with petit larceny for allegedly stealing a political mailer from a mailbox in Scotia.

Mastroianni, the Republican candidate for the 111th Assembly District, appeared to be caught on Ring camera video taking mail out of the mailbox and saying “bad, bad, bad.” He then puts in his own mailer.

Scotia Police said in a news release on Thursday that Mastroianni voluntarily turned himself in. The investigation found no other victims and was an isolated incident.

Mastroianni, a Rotterdam Town Board member, lost his race to incumbent Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara in the district, which covers parts of Schenectady and Montgomery counties. Santabarbara got 59% of the vote compared with 36% for Mastroianni.
