Former Rensselaer County elections commissioner gets probation in ID theft case

Jason Schofield, a former commissioner of elections for Rensselaer County, has escaped jail time in his case involving ballot fraud.

Schofield was given a one-year probationary period and a fine of up to $3,200 on Monday.

He falsely applied for phony absentee ballots in 2021 using voters’ names and birthdates.

Additionally, he acknowledged that he stole nine ballots, knowing that the official records of the Rensselaer County Board of Elections would fraudulently indicate that the voters had received their ballots by mail.

In December 2022, Schofield stepped down.

Back in September, Rich Crist, Jim Gordon, and Leslie Wallace—three defendants in the ballot fraud trial—were all found not guilty. They are all senior officials in the administration of Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin. In this case, McLaughlin was not charged.
