Somerton Community Mourns After Man Is Fatally Struck by a Driver on New Year’s Morning, Turning a Day of Celebration Into Tragedy

Thedailymiaminews– According to The Daily Miami News, SOMERTON, AZ After being struck by a driver who is currently charged with one count of second-degree murder, a man from Somerton was slain.

On the morning of New Year’s Day, Esteyan Medel was killed at the age of just 21. In an attempt to acquire additional information from Somerton Police, his family has decided to talk about their loss.

Medel was struck on West County 15th Street and south Somerton Avenue.

The family disputes the police’s claim that the driver stayed at the site and cooperated.

The victim’s father, Steve Medel Jr., stated, “The person who struck him took off, struck my son, and left him on the ground.”

We have repeatedly contacted Somerton Police Department to request an interview or to clarify the facts of this story, but they have not yet agreed to one.

The police have stated that they will contact us, but they have not specified a day or time.

Although the driver, Alfredo Enriquez Flores, 45, did escape the site of the collision, they apprehended him that same day, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s office.

He is charged with at least two felonies, including fleeing the scene of a tragic accident and second-degree murder.

He has a $500,000 bond and is being held at the Yuma County Jail.

Medel’s family, meanwhile, explains Esteyan’s personality.

Steve remarked, “He was kind, never retaliated, never got into trouble, never did nothing to anyone, and he rarely went out—if I remember correctly, that was about the fourth time he had ever gone out in his life.”

On January 18, from 4 to 8 p.m., the family will hold a fundraiser at Famous Dave’s in the Yuma Palms Mall.

“He was a part of us, he was a part of the community, and we just want to reach out and just the way he left you know, we’re just as shocked as you know,” Esteyan’s uncle Mark Anthony Medel said. “We’ll see what happens from there.”
