On Saturday, President Joe Biden dominated the South Carolina Democratic primary, receiving more than 96% of the vote for his party’s presidential selection.
According to unofficial results from the South Carolina Election Commission, Biden received 126,321 votes, compared to Marianne Williamson’s 2,726 and Dean Phillips’ 2,239. The state Republican primary is scheduled for February 24.
Despite Black pastors urging him to call for a cease-fire in Gaza, the South Carolina primary results suggested that Biden may still be popular among Black voters.
“In 2020, it was the voters of South Carolina who proved the pundits wrong, breathed new life into our campaign, and set us on the path to winning the Presidency,” said Vice President Joe Biden in a statement.
“Now in 2024, the people of South Carolina have spoken again and I have no doubt that you have set us on the path to winning the Presidency again — and making Donald Trump a loser — again.”
Biden continued to criticize Trump, claiming that he is leading a choir of “dangerous voices” who attempt to divide and drag the country backward.
Phillips, a Minnesota congressman, praised the incumbent Biden while applauding the number of votes he garnered and hinting that he will continue his longshot presidential campaign.
“Cracking four digits never felt better! “Congratulations, Mr. President, on a good old-fashioned whooping,” Phillips wrote on social media. “See you in Michigan.”
Williamson initially ran for public office in 2014 but was unsuccessful in her attempt for a seat in Congress. She then ran against Biden in the 2020 presidential primaries, finishing her campaign in January, and promised to support the Democratic nominee.
