Man charged with rape, robbery, and kidnapping after mother identifies him in Chicago police bulletin

Chicago police investigators’ decision to publicize a surveillance image of a man wanted for kidnapping, robbing, and raping a woman on the West Side paid off immediately last week, when the suspect’s mother turned him in, according to court records.

The 30-year-old lady was getting into her car in the 100 block of South Cicero when a man she didn’t know approached her with a firearm around 5 p.m. on March 14, according to officials. He demanded her phone and threatened to murder her if she did not sit in the passenger seat of her car, according to a CPD arrest report.

According to officials, the man drove the victim to a residence and forced her to go inside. According to official court records, he forced the victim to undress before raping her twice.

Following the incident, he returned her to her car and drove to the junction of Lavergne and Monroe, where he bailed out and fled on foot, according to the CPD.

Last week, authorities published a CCTV image of a guy they were attempting to identify in relation to the case. The mother of 30-year-old Davaris Sims immediately contacted them.

In a detention motion, prosecutors stated that she identified her son as the individual in the picture. The victim later recognized Sims in a photo lineup, according to the petition.

Sims was arrested at his residence, less than a block from the intersection of Lavergne and Monroe, by CPD police and a US Marshals task team. They claimed to have discovered a replica pistol in his pants pocket when they arrested him.

Judge David Kelly granted the state’s petition for detention, citing the claimed crime’s random and violent nature.

Sims faces charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault while armed, aggravated kidnapping while armed, and aggravated vehicular hijacking while armed.

According to Cook County court records, Sims has had 38 complaints filed against him since 2011. Almost all previous cases were misdemeanors, with 14 labeled as domestic-related cases, all of which were immediately dismissed.
