A southeast Portland woman recounted feeling terrified and deceived when her boyfriend turned on her and began stabbing her on Thursday.
Jessica DeTrant, 42, who is pregnant with his kid, said the stabbing occurred after he had been drinking with a neighbor who was also attacked.
According to Portland police, 21-year-old Justin Barrera-Guild is in jail facing several counts, including felony assault, after attacking two individuals, including his pregnant girlfriend. DeTrant stated she didn’t recognize her lover anymore, but it wasn’t the person she knew and loved.
“I believed I would die. I thought Mike was going to die. “Justin has never been this way,” DeTrant explained. “I’m not sure what happened. But he wasn’t himself, and I’m not sure who did it. But it was not the person I adore.”
She explained that what turned out to be the worst night of her life began as a nice hangout early Thursday morning. DeTrant stated that she was with Barrera-Guild and their neighbor Mike as the two men drank together.
“They were both really inebriated. Mike attempted to walk us home, but Justin unlocked and opened the door, and he began attacking Mike. Initially, I assumed he was simply punching him. “But then Mike said he thought he was going to die,” she explained.
DeTrant stated that this is when she discovered he was not just punching Mike, but also stabbing him. She stated she tried to pull him away, but he turned on her.
“He stabbed me twice in the skull, once in the shoulder. “And then he started beating me with brass knuckles,” DeTrant explained.
Portland police arrived at the site on Southeast 122nd Avenue after getting two complaints about the incident. When police arrived, they reported that the attack was still underway, with the perpetrator standing over one of the victims.
“He just looked at me, and I didn’t recognize him.” He didn’t recognize me. The only way I was able to stop was when I told him I loved him. And that is the baby because I am pregnant. And he kind of paused, and then the cops arrived, and he raced out of them, and I heard a gunshot. I assumed he had died. “But they claimed they shot him with a rubber bullet,” DeTrant stated.
While Barrera-Guild was processed into the Multnomah County Detention Center, DeTrant and Mike were brought to a nearby hospital. That’s where the knife tip used to stab DeTrant was extracted from her head.
“Mike is truly a hero. He is the one who fought back. I recently learned that he had contacted the cops. I’m not sure how he achieved it. It was terrible. It was by far the worst experience I’ve ever had. That was terrifying. I didn’t care that I’d been stabbed. I was scared about Michael since it was happening over and over again,” DeTrant explained.
She stated that her now ex-boyfriend is normally a gentle person, and she is unsure what triggered him. However, she stated that he has been battling a lot recently, and that combined with alcohol was most certainly a recipe for disaster.
“I love him. But what he did was awful. “And he’ll have to pay the consequences,” DeTrant explained.
The neighbor is still in the hospital with critical injuries but is likely to live.
Barrera-Guild is set to be arraigned on Friday at 2 p.m.
