A developer offers plans for the tallest skyscraper in the unusual city of US

An ambitious real estate developer has unveiled ambitions to construct the tallest building in the United States in the odd location of Oklahoma City.

Matteson Capital, a California-based corporation, revealed last week that it will petition city officials to raise the Boardwalk at Bricktown Tower development project’s height to a staggering 1,907 feet. If the request is granted, it will be the largest skyscraper in the United States and the sixth tallest in the world, according to a press release.

“Oklahoma City is experiencing a significant period of growth and transformation, making it well-positioned to support large-scale projects like the one envisioned for Bricktown,” said Scot Matteson, president and CEO of Matteson Capital

“We hope that this development will become an iconic attraction for the city, contributing to the expansion and diversification of the expanding economy by attracting investment, new enterprises, and jobs. It’s a dynamic atmosphere, and we hope to see The Boardwalk at Bricktown become the pride of Oklahoma City,” Matteson said.

According to the Oklahoma City Free Press, the Bricktown project’s original zoning proposal proposed for a 1,750-foot main tower, making it the highest in Oklahoma and the second tallest in the United States.

The planned Boardwalk at Bricktown development includes three buildings, each of which rises to 345 feet, as well as a fourth “supertall” structure, the Legends structure, which would dominate the Oklahoma City skyline. The requested height of 1,907 feet would commemorate the year Oklahoma was admitted to the Union as the 46th state.

“The project is a mixed-use marvel that spans approximately 5 million square feet and includes a 480-key Dream Hotel by Hyatt with 85 residential serviced condominiums in the Dream Tower; an additional 350-key Hyatt hotel with 100 serviced condominiums in the Legends Tower; 1,776 residential units ranging from market-rate to affordable workforce and luxury options; and a vibrant retail and restaurant scene with over 110,000 square feet of space designated for commercial use.

“The top floors of the supertall tower will consist of a public observatory, restaurant, and bar where visitors will be able to enjoy the sweeping city views,” the company stated in a statement.

AO, a California architecture firm, collaborated with Matteson Capital to create the skyscraper. However, before the building could begin, city authorities informed the Oklahoma City Free Press that the land would need to be rezoned.

“We understand the applicant’s representative is preparing a new SPUD application, which would go to the Planning Commission for a recommendation and City Council for a final decision,” a city official said.

Oklahoma City, home to over 690,000 inhabitants, is Oklahoma’s largest city. According to the US Census Bureau, the city is the 20th largest in the US and the sixth-fastest-growing top 20 city between 2020 and 2022.
