Ben Kredich’s Legacy: New Law Aims to Prevent Opioid-Induced Crashes – Is it Enough?

Following the tragic loss of their son, a Knoxville family spearheads efforts for the “Ben Kredich Act” to address opioid-related DUI incidents, aiming to save lives and prevent further tragedies.

Named after their late son, Ben Kredich, the legislation unanimously passed both chambers of the Tennessee General Assembly and awaits Governor Bill Lee’s signature.

Ben Kredich, 24, was fatally struck while walking along Kingston Pike in August 2023. The driver, Shannon Walker, was allegedly treated for an overdose of Narcan before the crash, prompting the family’s advocacy for the bill.

University of Tennessee Swim and Dive Director Matt Kredich, alongside his wife Kim, collaborated with State Senator Becky Duncan Massey to develop the legislation.

The act seeks to establish evidence of substance usage within 24 hours of an incident, presuming impairment if an opioid antagonist, like Narcan, is administered. First responders would also provide information on driving risks post-administration.

Matt Kredich emphasizes the act’s potential to save lives, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of legislative change arising from their loss.

Shannon Walker faces indictment on 12 counts, including vehicular homicide and DUI, underscoring the urgency for measures like the “Ben Kredich Act” to mitigate similar tragedies in the future.
