The Rotterdam Town Board held its first board meeting Wednesday night since town board member Joe Mastroianni turned himself into Scotia Police last week.

This comes after Mastroianni was seen in a ring doorbell video allegedly stealing mail from a resident’s home in Scotia.

Mastroianni was charged with petit larceny by Scotia Police.

Brenda Torosian has lived in Rotterdam for 37 years and called out Mastroianni to step down at the board meeting.

“You committed mail. Mail theft? When are you going to leave the town board? The town board deserves integrity. And by you staying on this board knowing what you did. You stole mail. You stole mail and you’re still here. And you had the nerve to still be here,” Brenda said.

Brenda spoke to NewsChannel 13 and questioned how he could still serve on the board.

“He’s a thief. He broke the law. And you cannot serve on the board when you when you have committed a crime,” said Brenda.

Town Board member Ronald Schlag said at Wednesday’s board meeting that if Mastroianni leaves the board it will be on his own terms.

“What happens with this situation is up to Joe. It’s in joe’s heart. He only has one individual to answer to in my opinion, but I would never ask for one person on this board to resign. That’s completely up to them,” said Schlag.
