Berkshire County fire grows to 1,100 acres

A wildfire in western Massachusetts grew in size overnight and is now a lot closer to some structures in Berkshire County.

In western Massachusetts, a wildfire spread over night and is now much closer to several buildings in Berkshire County.

Almost 1,100 acres of rocky slope have already been burned by the fire, and because of unfavorable weather, it is still spreading. By Wednesday lunchtime, there was no containment.

Once confined to Great Barrington, the fire has already extended into the Beartown State Forest and nearby Sheffield.

During the night, firefighters did not combat the fire. The rough ground was just too dangerous and too dark.

Firefighters are currently attempting to keep the fire away from several structures that are within a quarter-mile of it.

Although there are now no evacuation orders, given the uncertainty of the next few hours and days, that hasn’t been ruled out either. We anticipate that the smoke will be modest today because to the cooler temperatures. Chief Ryan Brown of the Lee Fire Department stated, “We asked the residents of Great Barrington, Sheffield, not to be afraid of the smoke.” We are keeping an eye on the fire’s progress, but the smoke isn’t going away as quickly as it did yesterday due to the weather, so the atmosphere is more smokey than it was.

People are being advised to stay inside and keep their windows closed, particularly if they have any respiratory conditions.

Around 2:30 p.m., another fire update is anticipated.
