A driver is still on the run after hitting a Springs police officer with their automobile Tuesday morning.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, the officer was conducting a welfare check at an apartment complex on Palomino Ranch Point at the time. A caller reported witnessing two people passed out in a car.
“The reporting party was concerned because the occupants of the vehicle appeared to be in ‘unnatural positions,” a lieutenant with the CSPD indicated.
When officers arrived, they saw the two occupants sprawled out in the car, as reported by the caller, with drug paraphernalia visible, according to the lieutenant. Police were able to rouse the pair, and the driver attempted to flee.
“The driver of the vehicle put the vehicle into drive and fled, striking an officer,” according to the lieutenant.
The officer was uninjured, and police searched the area for the vehicle. Just four minutes later, CSPD’s dispatch center received another complaint about a reckless driver who had collided with a landscaping boulder.
“The occupants were spotted fleeing the area. Officers identified the vehicle and combed the area, eventually finding the passenger,” the lieutenant stated.
The driver has not been found, but has been identified. When the man is apprehended, police say he will face several counts, including felony assault on a peace officer.
