Teen Driver Killed, Passenger Injured After High-speed Police Chase in Lodi Ends in Crash

A police chase in Northern California has left one person dead and another injured.

Around 11:17 p.m. on June 20, the Lodi Police Department reported seeing a vehicle driving recklessly and endangering the public near S. Cherokee Lane and E. Vine Street. According to LPD, an officer driving a marked police vehicle activated his emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle.

According to LPD, the vehicle continued to drive recklessly, leading the officer on a short pursuit. The pursuit came to an end when the suspect’s vehicle crashed and rolled over on its roof as it entered southbound Highway 99 at the onramp at Cherokee Lane and Century Boulevard.

According to police, the vehicle carried two people. The driver, a 19-year-old man, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to LPD. The passenger was transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

The investigation is being carried out following the San Joaquin County Officer Incident Protocol by members of the Lodi Police Department, the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, the Department of Justice, and the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal traffic collision.
