Driver Ejected, Killed in Fiery Head-on Crash With Teen Near Vernon, Authorities Say

A two-vehicle crash near Vernon has resulted in the death of a Sulligent man, authorities confirmed.

The accident occurred on Monday, June 16, along State Highway 18, approximately four miles west of Vernon. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, 60-year-old Therond Adams Jr. was driving a Mack tractor-trailer when it collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado pickup operated by a 16-year-old from Millport.

After the impact, the Mack truck veered off the roadway and struck a ditch. Adams was ejected from the vehicle and sustained critical injuries. He was first taken to Baptist Golden Triangle hospital before being transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where he died on June 24.

The teen driver and a 16-year-old passenger in the pickup were also injured and transported to a nearby hospital. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division is continuing to investigate the crash.
