Wrong-way Driver Causes Deadly I-5 Collision — Three Dead, Vehicles Engulfed in Flames

An investigation is ongoing to uncover what caused a fatal crash on Interstate 5 on Thursday evening.

A scorched barrier on Interstate 5 is all that remains after a violent crash that killed three people.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Thursday.

“An unidentified female was driving a Jeep Cherokee in the wrong direction on Interstate 5.” They were heading southbound in the northbound traffic lanes when they crashed head-on with a cargo van, which was occupied by two people,” said CHP Lt. Matt Zulim.

Moments thereafter, a Toyota carrying two passengers collided with the van.

Those two managed to escape before all three vehicles caught fire.

The female driver of the Jeep and the two passengers in the van all perished on the site.

“Because of the fact that the vehicles burned it is taking longer with the coroner’s office to identify the victims,” says Second Lieutenant Matt Zulim.

The California Highway Patrol had already been in the area before to the crash.

Someone had called 911 and reported the wrong-way driver.

“Wrong-way driving occurs more frequently than we would prefer. It’s a really significant issue,” Lt. Zulim explains. “I’d like to emphasize to the public that if you’re driving and notice a wrong-way driver, please phone 911 immediately. These are some of the most devastating accidents, involving a wrong-way driver.”

It is uncertain whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

The CHP is investigating what caused the crash.

“It’s extremely sad, it’s a tragedy, it’s a very serious crash, so this would check those boxes, and I feel extremely bad for the family that won’t be able to see their family again because of this,” according to Lieutenant Zulim.
